EPA Seeks Public Comment on Water Strategy to
Respond to Climate Change |
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
is seeking public comment on a draft strategy that describes the
potential effects of climate change
on
clean water, drinking water, and ocean protection programs and
outlines EPA actions to respond to these effects. The National
Water Program Strategy: Response to Climate Change focuses on
actions designed to help managers adapt their water programs in
response to a changing climate. Other elements of the draft strategy
include steps needed to strengthen links between climate research and
water programs, and to improve education for water program
professionals on potential climate change impacts. The strategy also
identifies contributions that water programs can make to mitigate
greenhouse gases. Some of the potential impacts of climate change on
water resources reviewed in the strategy include increases in certain
water pollution problems, changes in availability of drinking water
supplies, and collective impacts on coastal areas. The public comment
period is open for 60 days from March 28th 2008.

Internet Reporting Now Available for All Facilities
Reporting TRI Data
|
EPA con tinues
to speed release of Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) information to the
public and to enhance data quality. For the first time since TRI's
inception, all facilities that are required to submit data to TRI will
be able to do so over the Internet. The Internet system also has
quality checks built into the software, which will improve data
quality.
This year, companies are required to submit calendar year 2007 data
to TRI by July 1, 2008. Facilities will be able to use the Internet to
send information directly to EPA through our Central Data Exchange.
The TRI-ME software was launched for 2001 TRI reports, and moved
exclusively to compact discs for 2005 reports. For 2006 reports, in
addition to the compact disc, an on-line version was also offered only
in states participating in the TRI State Data Exchange.

EPA is announcing the
availability of almost $50 million in grant funding to establish clean
diesel projects
aimed at reducing emissions from the nation's existing fleet of diesel
engines. |
These grants were authorized by the
Energy Policy Act of 2005 and funded for the first time this fiscal
year, will be administered by EPA's National Clean Diesel Campaign (NCDC)
and its network of seven collaboratives, made up of EPA regional
offices and public and private sector partners.

Diesels are the economic workhorses of the
nation, and over the past decade, EPA has set stringent new
particulate and nitrogen oxide standards for most types of new
engines. These regulations will annually prevent more than 20,000
premature deaths and yield more than $150 billion in public health
benefits when fully implemented. The funding announced is aimed at
reducing emissions from the existing fleet of 11 million diesel
engines that pre-date these standards. Addressing the existing fleet
is important because diesels remain in use for decades.
The grants are targeting school or transit
buses, medium and heavy-duty trucks, marine engines, locomotives and
nonroad engines. Grant recipients can use a variety of cost-effective
emission reduction strategies, such as EPA-verified retrofit and
idle-reduction technologies, EPA-certified engine upgrades, vehicle or
equipment replacements, cleaner fuels and creation of innovative clean
diesel financing programs.
NCDC uses a proactive, incentive-based approach
to achieve environmental results. More than 400,000 existing diesel
engines have already been retrofitted during the campaign's first few
years, cutting harmful emissions by nearly 300,000 tons.

Biological Treatment of Hydrocarbons in Vehicle
Wash Systems |
|
An industrial tractor maintenance facility
experienced on-going maintenance problems due to petroleum
hydrocarbon accumulation in wash-water coming off heavy industrial
equipment during cleaning. The facility had an existing oil
absorption system to remove oily waste from the wash water and reuse
the reclaimed water for cleaning purposes.

EPA
Issues One-Year Registration for Soil Fumigant Iodomethane
|
|

EPA has approved a one-year registration of
iodomethane (methyl iodide) under highly restrictive provisions
governing its use. Iodomethane is an alternative to the
ozone-depleting pesticide methyl bromide – reflecting the U.S.
commitment to protecting the earth's ozone layer. The risk
assessment process for iodomethane has been one of the most thorough
analyses ever conducted on a new pesticide. When used according to
EPA's strict procedures, iodomethane is not only an effective
pesticide, but also meets the health and safety standards for
registering pesticides.
